Butte County is facing challenges in maintaining essential services and public safety due to resource limitations, as highlighted in recent statements made by county officials and representatives from various departments.

The county is currently dealing with a shortage of firefighters at rural and remote fire stations, which hinders the response to multiple emergencies simultaneously. Additionally, the upcoming opening of the new Butte County Jail in 2025 poses staffing and mental health service provision challenges.

Sheriff's patrols are also under strain, with only a small number of deputies responsible for patrolling extensive distances of County roads during certain times of the day. Furthermore, budget constraints have led to cuts in library hours and reductions in various county services impacting departments such as the County Assessor, Probation Officers, District Attorney, and Development Services.

Recognizing the need for sustainable funding and prioritizing the safety and well-being of residents, county officials are considering a 1¢ sales tax measure to be included on the November 5, 2024 ballot. This measure aims to address budget gaps and support critical areas such as wildfire protection, law enforcement, local businesses, homelessness initiatives, library services, and veterans' support.

The proposed sales tax measure would come with strict fiscal accountability requirements, ensuring transparent public disclosure of all spending. Moreover, essential items like groceries, prescription medicine, diapers, and feminine hygiene products would be exempt from the sales tax, alleviating the burden on residents for necessary purchases.
