Today, Assembly Republicans in Sacramento proposed an amendment to the existing budget, aiming to secure $1 billion for wildfire prevention. The proposal sought to enhance fire prevention measures across California. However, it was rejected by Democrats, who instead focused on aid directed solely towards Los Angeles.
The rejection occurred as Southern California continues to face severe wildfires that have consumed over 40,000 acres and destroyed 17,800 homes and businesses. The proposed funding was intended to improve emergency response times and help protect communities from future wildfires.
“Wildfire prevention is a glaring omission from the relief package being passed today,” stated Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher. He emphasized the need for resources and political determination to safeguard communities against such disasters.
Republicans have consistently advocated for increased funding in this area. Last year saw a reduction of $143.9 million in wildfire prevention funds by Governor Newsom and legislative Democrats. This recent rejection highlights ongoing concerns about leadership prioritizing Californian safety.
