Governor Gavin Newsom’s handling of Medi-Cal has sparked controversy as accusations arise about the program facing financial mismanagement. On July 3, 2025, Assembly Republicans sought a vote on Assembly Joint Resolution 4, aiming to initiate a comprehensive audit of the Medi-Cal system. They assert that the system is currently dependent on emergency bailouts and moving towards collapse.
Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher expressed his frustration with the process, stating, “We called for answers. They blocked the audit.” He highlighted issues such as unpaid doctors and patients losing care, attributing these problems to Governor Newsom’s administration and criticizing Democrats for obstructing transparency efforts.
The blocked audit could have shed light on the allocation of billions in Medi-Cal spending. Despite these challenges within Medi-Cal, Gallagher pointed out that Governor Newsom allocated $1 billion to the stalled high-speed rail project while allegedly underfunding Proposition 36 — a treatment plan supported by all counties in California.
Gallagher emphasized continued efforts for accountability: “We’ll keep fighting for answers,” he stated. He criticized what he sees as unsustainable benefits distribution by Newsom’s administration, arguing it leaves Californians without necessary care.
