Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher and Assemblyman David Tangipa have voiced opposition to recent changes in the California FAIR Plan, which may lead to increased insurance rates for homeowners. The FAIR Plan, a last-resort insurance option for those in wildfire-prone areas, has been authorized by Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara to seek $1 billion from insurers. Up to half of this cost could be transferred to policyholders.
Gallagher criticized the move, stating, “Forcing working families to pay for the failures of California’s insurance market is not a real solution.” He emphasized the need for reducing wildfire risks through measures like clearing excess fuel and improving forest management.
Tangipa echoed these sentiments, describing the plan as “just another band-aid to a broken system.” He called for addressing underlying issues with risk mitigation strategies such as vegetation management and removing regulatory barriers that hinder safety measures.
The FAIR Plan has become increasingly vital as wildfire risks grow and insurers withdraw from California. Gallagher represents the 3rd Assembly District, covering several counties including Butte and Yuba. Tangipa serves the 8th Assembly District, encompassing areas like Calaveras and parts of Fresno County.
