SACRAMENTO — The California Department of Education (CDE) has announced its decision not to comply with a directive from the U.S. Department of Education. This federal directive found that California violated Title IX by allowing biological males to compete in girls’ sports.

Assembly Republicans have criticized this decision, stating it endangers girls’ athletics and crucial school funding.

“California continues to push the dangerous insanity of letting men compete in women’s sports,” said Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher (East Nicolaus). “This is about fairness, safety, and the rule of law. Superintendent Thurmond and Governor Newsom are jeopardizing school sports programs across the state, all to appease a radical agenda and advance their political careers.”

Assemblywoman Kate Sanchez (R–Temecula) also commented on the situation: “Newsom’s Department of Education is blatantly violating Title IX — and now they’re doubling down. They refuse to protect girls’ sports for biological girls. It’s a shocking civil rights violation that could cost California billions in federal education funding.” Assembly Republicans are urging Governor Newsom to reverse this decision and ensure compliance with federal law to prevent harm to student-athletes and schools.
