Tuition fees for in-state students at California State University-Chico saw a 1.4% rise during the 2022-23 academic year, based on recently released figures, according to the latest disclosure from the National Center for Education Statistics.

California residents paid $7,972 to attend the public four-year university this year, reflecting an increase of $108 from the $7,864 charged in the 2021-22 academic year.

Non-resident students were charged 149% more than in-state students in 2022-23, paying $19,852. This amount rose by 0.5% compared to the $19,744 fee in the previous academic year.

Approximately 97% of the undergraduate body at the university are California residents, while about 2% come from other states and 1% are international students.

Data indicates that 73% of full-time undergraduates who began studies at California State University-Chico in 2022-23 received some form of financial aid. A total of 1,277 students were awarded grants or scholarships amounting to $13.2 million, and 753 students obtained student loans exceeding $4.1 million.

Across the entire undergraduate population, 7,921 students benefited from grants or scholarships totaling $80.3 million. Additionally, 4,292 students borrowed $23.6 million in federal student loans.

Undergraduate education costs have seen a significant increase over the past few decades. Data shows a 169% rise in the average total cost, including tuition, fees, room, and board, between 1980 and 2020.

According to a 2023 College Board report, in-state students at public universities paid an average of $11,260, while out-of-state students paid $29,150 in the 2023-24 academic year.

Meanwhile, student loan debt has steadily increased over the last 30 years, reaching $1.75 trillion in 2024, averaging a total of $28,950 per borrower. Federal loans make up 92% of the debt, with over half of students at both public and private four-year colleges graduating with student loans.
