After weeks of public pressure, Democratic leaders have decided to reverse their stance on AB 379, restoring automatic felony charges for adults soliciting sex from minors aged 16 and 17. This decision follows a concerted effort by Assembly Republicans to advocate for stricter penalties.

Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating: “This is another big win for common sense, brought to you by Assembly Republicans. I want to thank the people of California for helping us stand up to the radical Left and deliver another victory for public safety. I also applaud Assemblymember Maggy Krell for her courageous stand and her willingness to push the envelope within her caucus.”

Initially, Democrats had blocked these tougher penalties. However, due to increased public support driven by Republican efforts, they have now changed their position.

The Assembly Republicans have emphasized their commitment to advancing policies that prioritize children’s safety and ensure that offenders face substantial consequences.
