Assemblyman James Gallagher and Senator Megan Dahle have announced legislative efforts to support the Paradise Unified School District’s recovery following the 2018 Camp Fire. The fire resulted in significant destruction, including the loss of nearly 14,000 homes.
The lawmakers are seeking $21.5 million for the reconstruction of Paradise Elementary School, destroyed by the fire. This funding could be secured through either the state budget process or a standalone bill, AB 842. “Remarkable progress has been made in Paradise and everyone involved should be commended. But the job is not done,” said Gallagher. “Rebuilding this elementary school is a key part of the community’s recovery and we are committed to making it happen.”
With some funding already in place, construction is set to start this spring with plans to complete the first phase by August 2026. Gallagher and Dahle emphasize that additional funds are crucial to accommodate increasing enrollment numbers.
Senator Dahle stated, “The rebuilding of Paradise Elementary is a critical step in the continued recovery of Paradise and its surrounding communities.” She expressed eagerness to collaborate with colleagues across party lines to ensure comprehensive state support for Paradise’s revival.
Paradise Unified School District Superintendent Tom Taylor highlighted the necessity of rapid reconstruction due to unexpected growth, stating that state funding plays an essential role in family recovery efforts in Paradise.
In addition to reconstruction efforts, PUSD has requested help from Gallagher and Dahle to prevent penalties for not meeting staffing requirements. They have submitted a budget request and authored Assembly Bill 1438, which proposes extending PUSD’s staffing ratio waiver by at least seven years. Without this extension, PUSD risks facing over $150,000 annually in state penalties.
Taylor explained, “High levels of trauma and enrollment growth are requiring us to add administrators as we are adding students and classes.” He emphasized that AB 1438 would protect Paradise Unified from unjust penalties amid their complex recovery process.
Gallagher represents California’s 3rd Assembly District covering several counties including Butte and Yuba. Dahle serves California’s 1st Senate District which also encompasses numerous counties such as Lassen and Siskiyou.
