Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher criticized Governor Gavin Newsom’s May Revision of the 2025-26 state budget, expressing strong disapproval of the governor’s approach to California’s $12 billion deficit. Gallagher accused Newsom of deflecting responsibility by blaming former President Donald Trump during a press conference.
“Newsom’s finger-pointing on the budget shortfall is the biggest load of crap I’ve ever seen from a politician, and he shovels out a lot of it,” said Gallagher. He attributed the financial issues to what he described as Newsom’s “reckless spending, false promises, and failed leadership.”
Gallagher further stated that “Newsom needs to stop blaming everyone else and own up like a man.” He criticized Newsom for promising free healthcare to illegal immigrants while suggesting that such policies are financially unsustainable for California. According to Gallagher, these promises have led to increased taxpayer burdens despite unmet infrastructure needs and underperforming schools.
Under Governor Newsom’s administration, state expenditures have risen significantly without corresponding improvements in public safety, education, or affordability. Gallagher argued that the May Revision relies on temporary measures such as accounting tricks and delayed payments instead of addressing fundamental problems.
“Californians are paying more and getting less,” said Gallagher, asserting that the budget does not provide necessary changes. He called for fiscal responsibility by advocating for living within means and prioritizing taxpayers’ interests over political maneuvering.
