Democrat leaders in the Assembly removed a provision from AB 379 that would have classified purchasing sex from 16 and 17-year-olds as a felony. Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher criticized this decision, stating it left teenagers vulnerable and criticized the influence of political allies over public safety.
“They didn’t cave to logic or evidence. They caved to fringe activists,” Gallagher expressed his disapproval over the changes, emphasizing on the need for stricter consequences for offenders.
Further, Gallagher focused on Governor Gavin Newsom’s role, criticizing his silence on the matter. “Governor Newsom says his party needs to change. Fine. Start here,” he stated, urging the governor to amend the bill and reinforce it with felony penalties.
He expressed concern about the message this decision sends, accusing the governing party of prioritizing political alliances over the protection of children. “Grown adults are buying children. His party responded by making it easier for them to get away with it.”
Gallagher stressed the Republican commitment to using all available legislative means to address this issue. “We will use every legislative tool we have to make sure these children are protected.”
He pointed out that Governor Newsom’s continued inaction would imply responsibility for the consequences. “If the Governor keeps hiding from this, then he owns it. And so does every Democrat who let it happen.”
Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher represents California’s 3rd Assembly District, which includes Butte, Glenn, Sutter, Tehama, Yuba, and parts of Placer County.
