Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher has expressed his approval of Proposition 36 taking effect, following its passage by a significant majority in the November election. Gallagher emphasized the importance of accountability in California, stating that the new law aims to impose consequences for those repeatedly involved in theft or drug-related offenses.

“With Prop. 36 now in effect, today marks the beginning of a new era of accountability in California. The message sent by voters was clear – if you repeatedly break the law by stealing or selling hard drugs, there will be consequences,” said Gallagher. He further stressed the necessity for California to fully support law enforcement and related services to enforce these measures effectively.

Gallagher criticized Governor Gavin Newsom and Democrat lawmakers for attempting to undermine Proposition 36 during the summer through amendments to unrelated public safety legislation and proposing an alternative ballot measure perceived as lenient on crime.

Governor Newsom’s remarks from September also drew criticism from Gallagher. In response to a poll showing strong voter support for Proposition 36, Newsom had questioned which state he was living in.

Assemblyman James Gallagher represents California’s 3rd Assembly District, covering Butte, Glenn, Sutter, Tehama, Yuba Counties and parts of Placer County.
