James Gallagher, a California State Assembly Republican leader, posted several comments on August 28, 2025, criticizing various state policies and officials.
In a post from the morning of August 28, Gallagher questioned previous scientific guidance during the COVID-19 pandemic. He wrote: “Were these the same scientists you listened to when you required 2 year-olds to wear masks? Ok then spare us all the lecture. They should have been gone a long time ago.”
Later that day, Gallagher responded to criticism from Democratic colleagues regarding his new state proposal. He stated: “I do love my Democrat colleagues attacking my new state proposal as a distraction from “urgent legislate priorities.” LOL! Like what? Raising our gas prices and electricity rates even higher? Spending $250 million on a special election instead of fully funding public safety”
Shortly after, he commented on disaster recovery efforts in relation to housing reconstruction. Addressing the Governor’s Press Office, he wrote: “Ouch! @GovPressOffice gets fact checked hard on the wall. It was the fastest clean up ever (clearing lots) by the Trump Administration, but permitting and rebuilding (state and local) has been painfully slow as has been documented by the actual citizens who lost their homes in”
Gallagher’s posts reflect ongoing debates in California over COVID-19 mitigation measures for young children, public spending priorities such as elections versus public safety funding, and delays in disaster recovery and home rebuilding processes at the state level. These issues have featured prominently in recent legislative sessions.
