California State Rep. James Gallagher, who serves as the Assembly Republican Leader and represents California’s Third Assembly District, shared a series of posts on social media expressing his views on the intersection of Christian teachings and government involvement in social welfare.

On January 17, 2026, Gallagher wrote, “Except that Jesus didn’t call for the government to do any of those things. He called YOU to care for the sick (out of your own compassion and your own pocket, not the pockets of others). He called YOU to provide food to the hungry (from your own pantry). He called YOU to https://t.co/JJSFQGMu1X”.

Later that day, he commented on current affairs by stating, “Well stated, truthful summary of our current insane state of affairs https://t.co/0Pyjvda2O6”.

On January 18, 2026, Gallagher further addressed his perspective regarding religious values and government policy: “Jesus certainly did NOT put his trust in Herod. The magnificence of Roman administration was not his muse. This idea that it is un-Christian to reform or cut social welfare programs is absurd and not in accordance with the teachings of Christ. Government can only do so much.”

Gallagher represents communities across Butte, Glenn, Placer, Sutter, Tehama and Yuba counties as part of his legislative duties. As detailed on his official website, he maintains offices in Chico and Sacramento and provides constituent assistance as well as resources for public services such as transportation and community support. In addition to serving as Republican Leader in the California Assembly, Gallagher regularly issues press releases outlining his positions on legislative matters.

Gallagher’s recent comments reflect ongoing debates about the role of faith-based principles in shaping public policy related to social welfare programs. His statements come amid broader discussions within state legislatures about reforms or reductions in government-administered aid.
