California State Rep. James Gallagher, who serves as Assembly Republican Leader and represents several northern California counties, posted a series of tweets in late March 2026 raising concerns about government transparency, civil liberties, and accountability.

On March 29, Gallagher questioned the implications of authoritarian leadership by asking: “Say there arose an ACTUAL authoritarian leader who:

Restricted your freedoms.

Violated your civil rights.

Told you when and how you could leave your home.

Forbid your kids from attending school.

Abolished attending church services.

Shut down your business or took away”.

Two days later, on March 31, Gallagher raised questions regarding the release of certain files and possible conflicts involving a public official’s relationship with a Chinese national. He wrote: “Why doesn’t he want the file released?

I think people deserve to know the evidence about his relationship with a Chinese spy.

Another legit question: has he ever slept with people who work for him?

All things voters should know before voting.”

Later that same day, Gallagher criticized what he described as a lack of transparency in government spending: “This is completely ridiculous.

These are taxpayer dollars. We deserve to know how OUR money is being spent.”

Gallagher represents areas including Butte, Glenn, Placer, Sutter, Tehama, and Yuba counties as part of his role in the California Assembly (official website). As Assembly Republican Leader (official website), he has also provided constituent services such as assistance with state agencies and resources for public transportation and community support (official website). His district map outlines the communities served under his leadership (official website).
