Yesterday, the Los Angeles Times published a story on two new Republican Assemblymembers in Sacramento who succeeded in flipping traditionally Democratic districts. Jeff Gonzalez from Indio and Leticia Castillo from Corona were sworn into office last week. They managed to secure votes from both Republicans and Democrats frustrated with rising living costs, homelessness issues, and a perceived lack of representation by the supermajority.

Assemblyman Gonzalez spoke about his supporters, saying, “These are just working-class folks who came here for whatever reason, from another county or state, and just want to live the California dream. They’re seeing it go away, and they want someone to stand up for them.”

Assemblywoman Castillo attributed her win to Californians focusing on more pressing issues than those emphasized by Democrats’ culture war policies.

Californians have been dealing with high living expenses, increasing crime rates, and gas price hikes while feeling that Democratic leadership maintains the status quo. The recent election results suggest a demand for change.
