SACRAMENTO – After a week of criticism regarding his special session, Governor Gavin Newsom addressed the public on X, claiming that a Republican proposal to suspend California’s gas tax would negatively impact road projects and employment.

Assemblyman Tom Lackey (R-Palmdale) introduced the bill in question. According to Lackey’s proposal, any revenue lost from the gas tax suspension would be compensated by funds from the state’s general fund.

“People lie when they get desperate,” said Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher (Yuba City). “Gas prices have soared under Newsom and he will do anything to distract from his schemes to push costs even higher. But this is a new low, even for him.”

Two bills were introduced during this special session: a Republican plan aimed at providing immediate relief for drivers and Newsom’s proposal, which some warn could lead to increased gas prices and potential shortages.

California’s current road conditions and employment rates also reflect poorly on Newsom’s administration. The state has the second-highest unemployment rate in the country, and its road conditions have deteriorated significantly during his tenure.

Gallagher criticized Newsom’s credibility on these issues: “Sorry, Governor. Looks like you’ll have to find someone else to blame for the sorry state of California’s roads and the most expensive gas in the nation.”
