Gavin Newsom recently unveiled a new plan to address homelessness, but it has been met with skepticism and criticism. Emily Hoeven of the San Francisco Chronicle dismissed the initiative as a “rerun” with no fresh ideas or effective measures.
According to Hoeven, Newsom’s announcement lacked significant newsworthy content. The plan is described as a suggested ordinance that cities are not required to adopt, lacking enforcement and funding provisions. It also advises against penalizing individuals for sleeping outside if they have no alternative accommodations, which raises questions about what has actually changed.
Statewide leaders expressed their frustration with Newsom’s approach. They argue that cities have already implemented encampment policies and updated laws in accordance with state guidance over a year ago. What these cities require is tangible assistance rather than another memo.
Emily Hoeven encapsulated the sentiment by stating, “Sigh. Another day wasted on political posturing instead of substantive policy.”
The homelessness crisis in California continues to escalate while the governor’s response remains unchanged.
