Assembly Republicans have halted a vote on a proposed $50 million fund intended for legal actions against the federal government. The fund, put forward by Democrats, aimed to address issues related to deportation of gang members and felons.
Republican Leader James Gallagher from East Nicolaus expressed his satisfaction with the outcome. “Shutting down today’s vote is a big victory for Republicans,” he stated. Gallagher criticized the Democrats’ initiative, describing it as a political maneuver to benefit Governor Gavin Newsom’s career. He urged Assembly Democrats to focus on addressing pressing issues like wildfire, crime, and inflation instead of advancing what he termed as Newsom’s presidential ambitions.
The decision reflects ongoing tensions between California’s Republican and Democratic lawmakers over state priorities and political strategies.
