City of Chico issued the following announcement.
On New Year’s Eve, at about 10:15 am, the Chico Police Department began receiving calls of a fight in the parking lot of a business in the 200 block of Walnut St. The callers
began reporting that at least one of the assailants had a pistol and was “pistol whipping” the other man.
Patrol Officers responded and learned at least two males attacked another man before fleeing the area in a white Honda sedan. Witnesses informed Police that the suspect vehicle
was last seen turning into an apartment complex in the 1100 block of W. Sacramento Ave. Patrol Officers and the Violence Suppression Unit responded to the complex and
initiated a search. VSU located the white Honda occupied by three individuals. While detaining these individuals we located the loaded firearm used in the assault. The detained
individuals were identified as two local juveniles and 18-year-old Zachary AHRENS-GRAVELLE.
As VSU Detectives conducted their investigation, they determined only one of the juveniles and AHRENS-GRAVELLE were the two involved in the assault. The Juvenile was
booked into Juvenile Hall charged with assault and other charges. AHRENS-GRAVELLE was booked into Butte County Jail on Assault and a multitude of weapons charges; he
was the individual who was armed at the time of the attack.
AHRENS-GRAVELLE is currently out on bail stemming from a felony arrest in November. The firearm he possessed is believed to be a “ghost gun,” an untraceable, kit firearm
partially built that is finished by the purchaser at home.
Detectives are aware there were witnesses who attempted to intervene and who might have more information on this case. We ask that witnesses please reach out to the Chico
Police Department and request to speak with Detective Jack Ditty and reference case # 20-007159.
