Nasal discharge, especially if it is accompanied by a loss of smell or taste, could be a sign of sinusitis, which may be correctable with surgery.
According to the Mayo Clinic, chronic sinusitis involves symptoms that continue beyond three months, in spite of treatments. Causes can include infection, growths in the sinuses (such as nasal polyps) or swelling in the lining of the sinuses.
“There are lots of cases where we can solve the problem in the office very quickly, and the patients go back to having a pain-free and nice lifestyle,” Dr. Jeffrey Feinfield of Bella Vista ENT & Facial Plastic Surgery, told the Chico Times.
Bella Vista offers a free, online assessment to help those suffering with the symptoms of sinusitis to determine whether they may be dealing with the chronic version of the condition. Try the Sinus Quiz to get to the root of the problem.
While the most common symptoms of sinusitis noted by the Mayo Clinic include thick, discolored nasal discharge and congestion, as well as pain, tenderness or swelling around the eyes, cheeks, nose or forehead, other problems can also occur. Those include pain around the ears, upper jaw and teeth, as well as sore throat, bad breath and fatigue. Serious complications can result from untreated sinusitis, such as vision loss or other infections, such as meningitis.
