(Washington, D.C.) – On June 29, Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) responded the Supreme Court of the Unites States’ ruling on Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President and Fellows of Harvard College. The court ruled that affirmative action policies at Harvard and the University of North Carolina both violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution and are therefore unlawful.

“SCOTUS came to the correct and sensible conclusion in today's ruling. University admissions should be based on the individual merits of each applicant, not their race. California voters rejected an affirmative action proposition in 2020, with good reason,”said Congressman LaMalfa. “Race-based discrimination is immoral and illegal under the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution. Universities have discriminated against applicants based on their race for too long, and a reality check was sorely needed. The fight is not over. It is up to state legislatures and lawmakers to make sure that state-funded universities are complying with the laws of the United States, and discipline them where necessary. Public institutions must not be permitted to pick winners and losers.”

Congressman Doug LaMalfa is a lifelong farmer representing California’s First Congressional District, including Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Shasta, Siskiyou, Sutter, Tehama and Yuba Counties.
