SACRAMENTO – This week, Governor Gavin Newsom introduced a proposal to impose new storage requirements on refineries as part of his campaign to "hold big oil accountable." The Governor has indicated he may call a special session if the Legislature does not pass the proposal promptly.
Newsom asserts that the bill will reduce gas prices and protect against supply shocks. However, his own energy commission has raised concerns that the policy could "create shortages" and "increase average prices."
Critics argue that instead of addressing what they see as the real issues—high taxes and expensive mandates—Newsom continues to advocate for policies they believe have repeatedly failed Californians.
Republicans have expressed their intent to oppose these measures, aiming to address what they consider the true causes of high gas prices and work towards making California more affordable.
