SACRAMENTO – Today, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill package aimed at addressing retail theft. This action follows previous efforts to amend drug, homelessness, and theft reforms under Proposition 36.
Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher commented on the situation: “Gavin Newsom doesn’t deserve an ounce of credit for fighting the crime crisis,” he said. “For his first five years in office, he ignored and downplayed rising crime. He is only acting now because he knows the people of California are fed up with the lawlessness and are taking matters into their own hands with Prop. 36.”
Gallagher criticized Newsom's actions as contradictory, suggesting that the governor attempted to undermine these reforms before signing them into law. “Californians are sick and tired of rising crime, and they are sick of Newsom’s hypocrisy," Gallagher stated. "While these bills are a win for Californians, they almost didn’t happen because Newsom wanted to play politics with public safety."
